Visiting Trentham Gardens this month? Here are five wildlife highlights worth slowing down for on your next visit! 💜🌿
Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) are stunning little white flowers that are synonymous with winter and the arrival of spring. They are also known as snow piercers, as they have hardened leaf tips that help the plant push through snow. You can find snowdrops across the gardens, but the best display is on the west side of the lake through Burke’s Wood! ❄️
During the winter, Trentham Lake sees an influx of different waterfowl species, but one particularly interesting bird present at this time of year is the Shoveler (Anas clypeata). Similar in size and shape to a mallard, the shoveler has a magnificently distinctive shovel-like bill! 🦆
Hazel trees (Corylus avellana) are now full of catkins, also known as lamb’s tails. These are the male flowers that shed their pollen in the wind. Keep your eyes peeled, as you may also spot the tiny female flowers – pink stars bursting from buds close to the tree’s branches! 🌳🌟
At this time of year, the herons start to become more vocal on the lake as they begin to gather at their communal nesting sites, called a heronry. Trentham is host to a heronry on the northern islands!
With increased sunlight in both intensity and duration during February, many of the overwintering butterflies that have been lying dormant in hidden locations start to emerge. One of the first species to do this is the vibrant, yellow-coloured Brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni). An invertebrate herald of spring, seen fluttering low to the ground! 🦋

Today were delighted to welcome Liam Beddall, Head Rosarian at David Austin Roses, as he worked alongside our Gardens Team on winter rose pruning!🌹✂️
January and February are the ideal months to prune while roses are fully dormant, and Liam guided the team through every step of the process. This was their very first prune, making it an important moment in the rose border`s journey! Establishing a strong framework now will shape the structure, health, and beauty of the roses for years to come. 🌟
The roses have already performed beautifully since being planted as bare root plants in November 2024. With their first prune now underway, we’re looking ahead to another blooming great summer! Plus, a new layer of bulbs planted last autumn will soon emerge, extending the season of interest in the rose border before the roses burst into flower. 🌷✨
