Trentham is an incredible habitat for a wide variety of plants and wildlife. While our famous Eurasian beavers and fabulous birdlife often steal the spotlight, invertebrates play an equally important role in the ecosystem! 🍃
From insects and arachnids to molluscs and more, these animals are a vital part of the food chain, providing food for larger species and helping to keep nature in balance. We recently highlighted the amazing variety of dragonflies and damselflies found across the estate, and now we have even more exciting news! 💜
Last week, thanks to a confirmed sighting by member David Emley (and his fantastic photo 📸), we recorded a rare dragonfly species never before seen at Trentham and, remarkably, the first ever record for Staffordshire: the Norfolk Hawker (Aeshna isoceles). 📸
This striking dragonfly is usually found in eastern parts of the country, which is where it gets its name. One of the earlier hawker species to emerge each year, it can be recognised by its beautiful yellow-orange colouring and is easily distinguished from the larger Brown Hawker (Aeshna grandis), another species regularly seen on the estate.
The Norfolk Hawker has a close association with Water Soldier (Stratiotes aloides), an aquatic plant that we have recently introduced to the wildlife ponds at North Jetty. We hope these ponds, alongside the lake itself, will continue to support existing wildlife while attracting new species to Trentham!
Keep your eyes peeled along the lake margins for flashes of orange as these magnificent dragonflies patrol their territory, hunt, court, and lay the next generation of eggs. 👀 A fantastic wildlife record and another reminder of just how special Trentham`s habitats are! 🌿✨

As the day winds down, there`s no better place to relax and recharge. Wander along the lakeside, enjoy a picnic with family and friends, take a post-work stroll, or let little ones burn off some energy in the Adventure Play area. 🍃
With the Gardens open until 8.15pm (last entry 7.15pm), there`s plenty of time to soak up the beautiful surroundings and enjoy the lighter nights. 🌙
