Our motion sensor camera traps at Trentham help us keep an eye on our family of Eurasian beavers all year round, allowing us to monitor their health, wellbeing and daily lives! 🦫

But these cameras sometimes capture more than just beavers… 👀

Recently, one of our traps picked up a surprise visitor: the UK’s smallest land carnivore, the weasel (Mustela nivalis)!

A member of the mustelid family, weasels are related to stoats, polecats, pine martens and otters. They’re fairly common in woodlands, scrub and hedgerows, but they’re so quick and secretive that spotting one in the wild is quite rare! 💨
Despite their tiny size, weasels are fearless hunters. These energetic little predators can take on prey much larger than themselves, including young rabbits. Their incredibly fast metabolism means they’re almost always on the move.

They sometimes get a bad reputation, but we think they’re fascinating little animals! We’re just glad our cameras caught a glimpse of one of Trentham’s more elusive residents.💜

Keep your eyes on our page for more wildlife moments captured around the estate! 📸

Work on Phase 2 of the Next Chapter Project at Trentham is now underway! 🌿

Over the course of 3 years, the Italian Garden at Trentham is being replanted with vibrant, long-lived perennials chosen by @tomstuartsmith for their colour, resilience and stability! The aim is simple: planting that can thrive in today’s unpredictable climate, coping far better with dry summers and wet winters than the original scheme. 🪏

2026 marks the second year of the project. Right now, the existing planting in the middle section is being carefully removed by our team of gardeners, and the beds excavated down to 200mm to strip away the old top layer. They’ll then be refilled with a sand and grit mix and left fallow to control weeds, ready for planting in October 2026. If you look in the northernmost section of the gardens whilst visiting, you’ll see Phase 1 of the project currently starting to flower! 🌸

It’s a big transformation, and we’re looking forward to seeing the next generation of the gardens taking shape! 🌼
