Work on Phase 2 of the Next Chapter Project at Trentham is now underway! 🌿
Over the course of 3 years, the Italian Garden at Trentham is being replanted with vibrant, long-lived perennials chosen by @tomstuartsmith for their colour, resilience and stability! The aim is simple: planting that can thrive in today’s unpredictable climate, coping far better with dry summers and wet winters than the original scheme.
2026 marks the second year of the project. Right now, the existing planting in the middle section is being carefully removed by our team of gardeners, and the beds excavated down to 200mm to strip away the old top layer. They’ll then be refilled with a sand and grit mix and left fallow to control weeds, ready for planting in October 2026. If you look in the northernmost section of the gardens whilst visiting, you’ll see Phase 1 of the project currently starting to flower! 🌸
It’s a big transformation, and we’re looking forward to seeing the next generation of the gardens taking shape! 🌼

The first spring blooms have popped in Trentham Gardens, and it’s got us excited for the season ahead! 🌸
Crocuses are already brightening the gardens, and the tulips won’t be far behind. Each day more blooms are pushing through, and over the coming weeks the gardens will see over a million bulbs bursting into colour across the gardens! 💜
