About you!

  • This role is full time, working 5 days over a 7 day working pattern on a rota basis. Flexibility is required to support artist touring events and exhibitions.

Estates and Biodiversity Volunteer

Role summary

Be part of a dynamic estates and biodiversity team, volunteering to conserve and protect this special place whilst gaining new skills and experience.

What’s involved?

  • Helping to control invasive plants, bashing, pulling and cutting; building, installing & maintaining nest boxes.
  • Helping to restore or keep clear historic footpaths.
  • Support our work to reduce plastics contaminating rivers and oceans by helping with litter picks.
  • You will also get involved with fence and boundary maintenance across the site.
  • Supporting our farmer with Lambing Events, through talking to the public, helping herd and feed sheep.
  • You could also be involved in wildlife reintroduction projects, restoring & monitoring habitats, supporting our Water Vole release.

Intro Talk Volunteer

Role summary

Our Intro Talk Volunteers give brief 10-15min talks in the garden to introduce our visitors to the fascinating history of Trentham Estate.

What’s involved?

  • Giving 15 min outdoor talks at set times about the hall, garden or estate.
  • Telling stories and anecdotes that people will remember, and answering any questions.
  • Keeping an eye on the time, so we can offer the intro talks regularly throughout the day.
  • Learning and sharing ideas with staff and volunteers.
  • You are important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures.
  • There might occasionally be some other activities that are of interest to you, that we could use your help with.

This role will suit you if you are…

  • Someone who loves being around people – you’ll meet a lot each day!
  • Confident in telling the history of Trentham in an engaging way.
  • Good at remembering facts and details.

Visitor Welcome Volunteer

Role summary

Join the Visitor Experience Team to support the delivery of a positive visitor experiences at Trentham. Ensuring our visitors receive a warm welcome, help them orientate themselves, make them aware of how to enjoy the great outdoors safely and encourage return visits.

What’s involved?

  • Welcoming individuals, families and groups to Trentham.
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Giving valuable information to enhance a visit.
  • Giving accessibility guidance.
  • Adhere to health and safety.

Tasks could include:

  • Providing local information about the site, activities and events available on the day.
  • Providing information about Trentham membership.
  • Assisting with online sales to support queue management on busy days.
  • Being visible, to guide and support visitors.
  • Helping litter pick on site.
  • Carry out on site facilities checks including gazebos and picnic tables presentation.
  • Sprinkling the Trentham Fairy dust to make their visit memorable.
  • Completing all mandatory online training, and any subsequent training that may support your role.

This role will suit you if you…

  • Love spending time outdoors whatever the weather.
  • Can interact with all age groups with enthusiasm and confidence.
  • Adaptable and calm under pressure.
  • The ability to stay calm in these situations is very important.
  • Available to volunteer for at least 3 hours, once a week or fortnightly, from May until the end of September.
  • Enjoy working with the public and helping them to adapt to any changes that will support a safe and enjoyable visit.

Park Guide

Supporting the property in two shifts. Summer hours – 10:30am – 2:00pm and 1:30pm – 4.30pm.

Role summary

Volunteer Park Guides help to conserve this special place and helping people to enjoy and understand it.

What’s involved?

  • Developing a good knowledge of Trentham Estate, its history, landscape, archaeological and biological importance in order to share this with visitors.
  • Welcoming visitors by providing information and guidance, and sharing your enthusiasm and knowledge of Trentham Estate with them.
  • Leading guided walks (optional) for visitors to share your knowledge of the estates park, woodlands, heathlands & wildlife.
  • Assisting with the upkeep and maintenance of Trentham historic habitats and achieving high standards of conservation and presentation; including removing litter and ensuring lost property is properly dealt with.
  • Monitoring the conditions of footpaths, fences, wildlife and outdoor public facilities, and reporting incidents and situations that may require follow up. • Helping with other activities and tasks that may crop up when you’re on duty, including assisting with public events and other activities.
  • Being aware of the different access requirements of all our visitors and assisting with these where necessary.
  • Dealing with queries from visitors and passing to the Duty Manager if necessary.
  • Reporting to your Volunteer coordinator any concerns, worries or issues you have, seeking assistance at the earliest opportunity.
  • Maintaining and enforcing the site rules, reporting any problems in doing so to the Duty Manager.
  • Becoming familiar with and then following our Health and Safety Policy. Copies of this are on the Volunteer Notice Boards.
  • Complying with our Values and Behaviours when volunteering.
  • Keeping abreast of Volunteer Bulletin notices relevant to you and your team.
  • Attending relevant meetings and training days throughout the year.
  • Being an ambassador for Trentham and keeping abreast of the organisation’s ambitions, strategy and motivations.

Garden Tour Guide

Gardening Volunteer

Role summary

Be hands-on as a valued member of the Gardens team, keeping our gardens and outdoor spaces looking their best (and accessible to all) year-round.

What’s involved?

  • You’ll be hands-on with the garden team keeping the garden looking wonderful all year round, completing tasks including weeding, pruning, and mowing.
  • You will play a crucial role in delivering and implementing our exciting new planting projects.
  • Working independently and as part of an amazing team.
  • Working outside in most weathers.
  • Engaging with our visitors to the gardens and making everyone feel welcome and able to explore. Flexibility to choose when you volunteer, be as involved as you want to be.
  • You are important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures. There might occasionally be some other activities that are of interest to you, that we could use your help with.

Visitor Experience Host

The Purpose

Our Visitor Experience Hosts play a pivotal role, being a point of contact for visitors ensuring a warm and friendly welcome to the Trentham Estate. Provide accurate and engaging attraction and activity information. Based outdoors.

The Person

We are looking for a customer focused and service driven individual, someone who is passionate about building rapport with customers. As a Visitor Experience Host, you’ll encourage return visits by creating positive and long-lasting impacts.

Required Experience

  • Previous experience in a similar environment such as a visitor attraction.
  • Have excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Target driven.

Key Accountabilities

  • You’ll assist visitors and inform them of what’s new in the Gardens, give directions and information to enhance their visit.
  • You will be engaged on the boat and train during peak times.
  • Be a point of contact at the Welcome Gazebo.
  • You’ll be visible in the Gardens, available to assist with enquiries, directions, queue management and accessibility (wheelchair hire and access assistance).
  • Handle visitor feedback, remedy if necessary or possible, record and feedback to the line manager.
  • During peak times to monitor tickets for validity, deal with any misuse and provide general assistance and guidance to visitors. There will also be a requirement to monitor external exits during busier periods.
  • Contribute to team targets and work collaboratively with Estates, Gardens and Management Teams.

Gardens Team Member

The Purpose

To maintain the grounds and gardens all year round. As part of the Trentham Estate Team, assist in being an integral member of the Team and work well with other teams on the estate.

Required Experience

  • Efficient maintenance, presentation and development of horticultural features and supporting infrastructure within all areas of the Garden.
  • Supporting team activity through flexible working hours to facilitate some maintenance tasks outside of opening hours or at weekends with overtime to meet demands of seasonal activities.
  • Plant and equipment use in line with garden policies.
  • Supporting the Trentham Garden and Estate Team as required.
  • Providing support for Garden events cover as needed which may include working overtime or weekend hours on rota.

In relation to generic responsibilities:

  • Maintain knowledge and adhere to relevant Group Policies and Procedures, Legislation and Regulations.
  • Develop and ensure safe working practices are always adhered to.

Experience, Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Practical skills in plant and border maintenance (pruning and training, topiary work, lifting and dividing, feeding, irrigating, P & D control, soil management).
  • Develop a sound background in machinery and equipment usage: mowers, strimmer’s, tractors, knapsack sprayers.
  • A thorough understanding and application of current Health and Safety legislation relating to garden maintenance operations.
  • An ability to work alone or as a member of a team (to work with other gardeners, students, volunteers, and contractors as may be required). Flexible approach.
  • To have worked in a ‘similar environment’ preferable but not essential (an historic garden).

Desirable Qualifications

  • PA1 and PA6 in chemical usage.
  • NPTC Tractor Driving.
  • A current, clean driving licence.
  • Horticultural Qualification to Level 3.
