Visitor Update - 12th January: Trentham Gardens has now fully reopened, and Trentham Shopping Village remains open as normal.🚨❄️
Following yesterday’s partial closure due to severe ice, the ice has now gone and the lakeside walk has now reopened for your enjoyment!🌲

When the temperature drops and the lake freezes over, our beavers know exactly what to do... They retreat to their cosy lodge and huddle together, sharing body heat to stay warm! 🦫❄️
They rely on a carefully stored food cache just off the south-west tip of Beaver Island. From the lodge, they slip out through an underwater entrance, swim beneath the ice, pick a juicy branch, then head straight back home to eat in comfort. 🌳
Their secret weapon is their fur. It’s double layered, with coarse outer hairs and a super-dense underfur packing up to 23,000 hairs per square inch. That insulation makes icy conditions just another part of daily life! ☃️It’s no surprise really, as Eurasian beavers live across an enormous range, from the edges of the Arctic Circle, through the Mediterranean, and all the way into central Asia.🐾
Here are some beaver footprints we found in the snow last year - a rare glimpse of their winter wanderings before they disappear back under the ice! 💜
