The Purpose
Our purpose is to nurture and grow this wonderfully special place for people, nature and wildlife to thrive. As a Gardener, you will be playing a vital role in ensuring we achieve this. We are recruiting into a talented team to help us achieve our goals and ambitious set of projects. It’s an exciting time in the gardens here at Trentham. We are currently collaborating with Tom Stuart-Smith, Professor Nigel Dunnett and David Austin Roses on various projects across the gardens focussing on sustainable new and revised planting schemes, that are designed with a changing climate in mind. This includes a focus on stable and resilient plant selection whilst considering what medium we are planting into.
Required Experience
Essential
- RHS Level 2 in horticulture or equivalent.
- Broad and expanding knowledge and passion of plants and horticulture.
- Practical horticultural skills gained through work experience – paid or voluntary. Ideally in a visitor facing/open garden would be desirable.
- Proficient use of a wide range of garden machinery, including mowers, tractors, strimmer’s and blowers.
Desirable
- PA1 and PA6
- Chainsaw certificates
- Tractor driving
- First aid
Key Accountabilities
- Day to day supporting and liaising with volunteers.
- There are a huge variety of tasks within the diverse gardens and are after someone with an efficient and practical approach to working. This includes the day-to-day maintenance as well as supporting the delivery of various the projects.
- High standards of maintenance, presentation and development of horticultural features and supporting infrastructure within the garden.
- You will take responsibility of certain areas/projects within the garden ensuring you are able to develop in role and make your own mark on the gardens.
- You will be proud and passionate about the work we do and happy to share this with our visitors.
- To work in a flexible and adaptable way. Providing support across the garden as needed which include weekends and late shifts on rota.
- Supporting wider teams across the Estate, with a proactive and ‘can do’ attitude.
- Reporting to the Supervisor, you will play a key role in maintaining and developing the garden, working as part of the team and independently.
