As many of you will have noticed, the recent high winds have caused disruption across the estate, bringing down some of our magnificent veteran trees. ๐ณ While itโs always sad to see these giants fall, itโs all part of the natural cycle of the woodland.
Here at Trentham, weโre committed to ensuring these trees continue their vital role in the ecosystem. Wherever safe to do so, we leave fallen trees on-site to create incredible deadwood habitats. ๐ฆ๐ This deadwood becomes a home for fungi, invertebrates, small mammals, and birdsโsupporting a whole network of life.
In Kingโs Wood SSSI, where 23 species of conservation importance live, these fallen giants also make way for new life. When a mature tree falls, sunlight floods the woodland floor, giving young trees and wildflowers like bluebells a chance to thrive. ๐๐ผ Meanwhile, the slowly decomposing trunks act as natural fertilizer and offer perfect hideaways for creatures like weasels and stoats. ๐ฆ๐พ
